Fandom Friday – Joss Whedon : Avenge us!

Avengers fans - this comes in XL

Being a Joss Whedon fan can be a rollercoaster. One minute you’re high as a kite after a new series or film is announced, the next you’re screaming in terror as you watch the overnight ratings come in. So when news emerged that one of the biggest comic book blockbusters on the development slate had Joss’s name attached to it to direct, you can forgive the faithful for being a little cautious.

Over on Whedonesque, the go to news site for all Whedonworld issues, they were counting their chickens. Leaf commented “Anyone else running around their living room going ‘OMG, OMG, OMG’? I know it’s not just me.” Some were more cautious and jdn27 was unconvinced – “I think it could be great for his career, etc… And I’m all for that. But personally, I prefer Joss working on his own properties.” Erendis even stuck his/her head over the parapet to say “It might even get Goners out of development hell”. Now that’s hopeful!

On Ain’t It Cool News we had a Joss fan who wasn’t impressed. “He is wrong for this project IMO. I’d love for him to prove me wrong but this movie needs someone that is first and foremost a visual shit storm type of director like Michael Bay. Joss is more a dialog and wordy type of awesome.” Said Engelhast. Revenge_of_Fett was less, er, candid. “Look, I’m ok with Joss, but he fails a lot! I don’t want every character being a snarky fuckin’ smart ass! And he can’t film action FOR SHIT! EPIC FUCKING FAIL!”

The fact that Joss recently had a show cancelled, and that Serenity didn’t set the box office alight, was not lost on some responders. “It’s doomed! It’s over! Well, Marvel had a nice run. Goodnight everyone!” said Darth Kaos.

Joss Whedon even trended on twitter for a while. Could this be the moment when Joss becomes mainstream? Will we see Justin Bieber in a cameo in Cabin In The Woods? No. No we won’t.

In other news, act two of Doctor Horrible in 8-Bit was released, and it is….superb. Go here to watch it. There was also much smiling to be had about handsome-as-hell finally being persuaded to get onto Twitter so that homophiles the world over could him with marriage proposals. All in all, a good week to be a Whedonite.
