Interview: Tim Minear, Co-Creator of THE INSIDE

Written by Kevin Beaumont on June 7, 2005 – 11:08 pmView Comments
In 2005 I conducted a very quick interview with Tim Minear, who was at the time working on crime show The Inside for FOX.
Kevin: The Inside’s premise seems to be a little more grounded in a realistic setting than, say, Firefly or Angel.  Can you tell us the reason for this shift in direction?

Tim: I don’t think it’s any more realistic than the two you mentioned, or even Wonderfalls.  Actually, what I mean to say is that I don’t think Firefly, Angel or Wonderfalls were unrealistic.  The Inside doesn’t have as large a fantasy or sf element, but it’s me taking what I do in genre and applying it to another genre.  I’m a stylist, mostly.

Kevin: Another year, another show.  The Inside is receiving a fair amount of promotion.  Do you feel happy with the promotional work being done, and are you more confident this show has a chance?

Tim: I shrug.  I like the promos, and there have been  many, but the snap choice to give it an air date right before it airs makes it uphill in a different way than promoting shows that are less easily defined.  I just do what I do, hope a network can bring an audience, then it’s my job to keep ‘em.

Kevin: You repitched The Inside (effectively binning the old concept) at the end of last year.  As you’ve seen the series come from conception to the finished product, how close would you say things have met your original vision of the show?

Tim: In the ballpark.  It’s been a super speed up version of development.  Sort of development as you go.

Kevin: Any non-linear story telling ? Out of Gas, Are You Now style episodes inthe works?

Tim: More than one, actually.

Kevin: And finally, do you think any of the potential audience will be able to specifically relate to characters in the show?

Tim: I think so.
